PostSubject: IC Scene - The Bridges   29.11.13 11:05

The road that Rayvs and Kharad had traveled on was mildly deceptive, slowly curving back toward the river as they followed it. Their journey eventually took them to a bridge that crossed to a small island in the middle of the dangerously-low river. On the far side of that was another bridge which led to the desert to the south. Across that bridge, the desert was partially obscured by a cloud of dust, but a keen eye could see movement within it.

To their right, the ruins of Torbah loomed large.

[OOC: This is the thread for scenes at location 5.]

Rayvs squinted across the desert, noting the wisps of movement in the dust cloud.

"It seems we're at a crossroads Kharad. Do you want to split up and check both the city and the desert?"

Kharad eyed the desert beyond with a skeptical gaze. He saw nothing, but yet could not shake the feeling that a thousand eyes peered back at him from behind the shroud of dust.

"Either way were walking into the unknown. Still though, perhaps we should cover as much ground as possible, as quickly as possible. I'll take my men south of the river to scout what we can. We'll not stray beyond sight of the river though, lest this desert claim our bones as its prize"

Rayvs nodded.

"Be careful, Kharad. If you find a horde, send a runner here by sundown, today or tomorrow. I'll investigate the city today, and leave a Ghilman here."

Kharad had the shorter path to travel and found himself at the edge of the desert long before an hour had passed. From his vantage point, he could spy several riverside camps along the un-navigable stream that the river had become. By all accounts, the river wouldn't be able to maintain the water needs of any army of the rumored size. However, Kharad was still a bit away from the cloud of dust spotted earlier and he got the sense that more than a few eyes were on him.

Rayvs, on the other hand, entered the city near what was once the caslte. Around him, he was surrounded by evidence that the city had burned. Only the odd straggler seemed to be linger, but there was no structure fit to inhabit and any that still had a roof were crumbling.

Neither man had long before sunset at their current locations.

As his men looked on toward the dustcloud with wary eyes, Kharad crouched low to the sand, constantly passing handfulls of sand between his palms, thinking. He gazed up toward the darkeing sky and frowned. He knew how cold the D'Shar Steppes could be once night had settled in. He couldnt begin to imagine what they were like in the great desert beyond.

"Marius, Samwar. Make your way quickly back to the bridges with this message. Kharad and the others are making their way toward the nearest of these riverside camps to attempt to make contact with these desert people. The rest of you, lets get moving"

Rayvs turned around to his men and sighed.

"Nothing in this city. Let's return to the meeting spot. I want to have nothing to confuse or distract me.... but first...

Let's explore the castle a bit, and see if there's anything interesting. It's been a long time since I've been to Torbah."

(Just ignore this)

The lone Gauntlet was the first, aside from Natirs scouts, to glance a sight of the bridges. He stopped and looked back at the rest of the Knight convoy.

"looks like were here"

From a distance, the fortifications on the bridges were plainly visible. Though the precise details weren't clear, they incorporated barricades and spikes to prevent horsemen from simply charging through. One camp was visible on the central island, where there was some activity. Further beyond there, at least one other camp covered the far end of the bridges and, presumably, the horde beyond.

Morek looked at the fortified bridge from beneath his full helm. He glanced over at Natir who he had chosen to ride beside before talking the first time since the band had begun moving out.

"Let us get this over with."

Morek put his heels to the flanks of his courser, sending the animal into an unhurried and casual canter towards the bridge. He was followed closely by his four conquistadors on their heavy Barclayan Warhorses. None of them seemed unduly tense or nervous.

Methodius raised his hand for a bit to have Ser Morek and Natir slow down a bit

"let's not get too close, they would see it as a threat whether we mean it or not. We need to send a lone man to tell them that we are here to negotiate when our war band is in their sight. The safest bet for both sides would be to have our negotiators meet in the middle of the open with both armies equally far on opposite sides, a summit of sorts."

Methodius scratched his chin with his other hand and continued

"Otherwise, if they allow us to park in front of their camp and things get rowdy, they will get potshots at us as we retreat. They probably would also be more open to this idea too since i doubt they would want knights armed to the teeth at their doorstep. what do the rest of you think about this?"

Natir nodded in confirmation of similar feelings to Sir Morek's remark, he took a moment before he was about to follow the Cross, but Methodius interrupted causing him to pause. Natir turned and scanned the defenses of the bridge. "That seems reasonable. I wouldn't want to be on the other side of that bridge if they decided to violently end negotiations."

"very well, if they are dead set on this war, then the beginning of the negotiations will be a delicate matter. I volunteer myself to be the lone man that goes to inform them that we would like to have a negotiation summit with their leaders or representative."

"If that's alright with everyone, which one of you would like to be at the summit? we need to have a number so they can match it with their honor guards or whatever they see fit, this way it stays fair."

Gilaver slowly nodded at Methodius' idea, but didn't seem to be inclined offer any kind of other reaction, whether positive or negative. Instead, he waited a few seconds after the Gauntlet stopped talking, and calmly volunteered to participate in the second part.

"I think I will participate in the summit then. A broad presentation of Knightly Orders might give them second doubts about violently ending the negotiations if they were planning that."

Natir spoke up,

"I didn't travel all the way hear to see you guys talk from afar. I'll be there."

Morek halted his horse before twisting about in his saddle, becoming overtly frustrated at all the delays.

"I would have thought that the Clarion Call at least would have understood tribal culture a bit better given their supposed expertise with the Jatu."

Morek snorted, it was like they expected this horde to be full of prim and proper diplomats.

"I've had enough waiting in this damn heat. Its time something happened one way or another."

Morek put his spurs to his horse again, sending the courser towards the bridge and the men on it, as he got closer he extended a hand in a universal greeting gesture. He made sure his approach was not too fast or too slow, coming at a casual speed. His men behind him didn't appear overtly relaxed but not tensed as if they were charging a battle line.

"Is anyone there?"

Natir watched as the Radiant Cross rode off, and after a slight pause, he spoke "Looks like the decision has been made. " With a short prayer to a god by the name of Leroy Jenkins, Natir spurred his horse and quickly caught up to the uncomfortable rider, and then slowed to match his velocity. His men followed suit.

"Halt!" called out a heavily accented voice. "You cannot pass beyond this point!"

A second voice, even more commanding than the first, joined in. "We are aware of your presence, knights of Pendor. We have fought you, yet your actions are contradictory. What is your business here?"

Morek brought his horse and Barclayans to a halt, just as the voice had said before speaking.

" Yes and you fought well though that was not our intention in coming to these lands. Our business as of now is a peaceful one."

Morek kicked his courser forwards a few steps before halting again.

"Might I at least see who I am speaking with?"

A pair of figures walked out from a small enclosure behind the main barricade line. A dozen warriors fell into line next to them. Before them, over a dozen archers rose from behind the barricades, arrows nocked but not drawn. They appeared to be Jatu. In the distance, a rider could be seen galloping away to the second bridge toward the desert.

"Peace you say?" The second man was speaking again. "Are you the lapdogs of the neglectful king, seeking to kiss our feet and ply us as cowards? Or do you simply set up a trap, seeking to lull us until your armies are upon us? Which is it? What are you demands?"

Morek's helmet tilted to the side slightly as he observed the archers and men briefly before answering.

"Watch your claims. I serve the Grandmaster of the Radiant Cross and by extension the Council of Ethos, not the King. If you want to talk to a lapdog try speaking to a Griffon Knight. As for demands we are not here to try and dictate terms to anyone. I'd like to speak with your leader or leaders is all."

He raised his arms and gestured towards the bridge and defenses.

"Such a gathering, or rumors of one is not something that goes unnoticed. My Order is here to discover what is going on in these lands for the good of the peoples of Ethos. This seemed a good enough place to begin. Was I wrong?"

The second half of the knights that had stayed behind approached to meet with first group. They rode slowly and in a non threatening manner. Methodius had his shield out but his sword hand was still on his horses reins. He heard Moreks last bit as they arrived and decided to stay out of it for the time being.

The Dragon banner was becoming heavy in Sigwald's right arm while the northerner was singing a few typical Ravenstern folksongs under his breath. Meanwhile Thane Alatin besides him looked as stoic as a Dragon knight, but that could be because the man was wearing his faceplate helmet in the middle of the desert. Which made Sigwald wonder if the Thane was disappointed in him for leaving his own helmet with the ranger Vanndal.

"Say, how long is this going to take?" He complained before spitting on the desert sand and watched the saliva disappear immediately. "Why aren't we doing the talking?"

Williams face was drenched in sweat, deserts were possibly the most miserable of climates in the world.

"Do you really want to be negotiating with a bunch of horse humping, desert dwelling, nomads?" he said. His words thick with annoyance.

If he was honest with himself he wanted to be doing the talking but he knew better, his temper was already short in the sweltering heat as it stood.

"But that one keeps mentioning Ethos. If there's one that gets humped by the horse, then let it be that Griffon over there." Sigwald pointed at Gilaver with his free hand. He did have a feeling that his sentence didn't quite come out right, but that must've been the heat.
