"Very well. However, if you need me there for anything, just wave for me and I'll join the conversation.

Gilaver watched as Natir left for the nobles. He turned to look at the troops.

"Maintain readiness, but lower your weapons. We don't want to accidentally blow this chance to continue without harming His Majesty's subjects."

Natir's attempt to parley was punctuated by...singing? From behind the rebel knights, some group belted out,

"Oh! Duke Darlion,
He ride, he fight for the King!
An army he would always...."

Natir didn't have time to hear the rest as the rebels were reacting and were not happy. Shouts could be heard from around the bend. Fighting seemed inevitable.

Natir sensing the cavalry's aggression slowly back away, and slow began to accelerate till reaching a full out sprint., and signaled one of his men to come up with his horse, while the others prepare for defending against an assault. He planned to mount his horse as soon as it arrived and run behind the lines of the Griffons so that he could make a decision on what to do without such an immediate threat.

Getting to the Wharf was a relatively easy affair, the distance between the Salt Gate and its location being fairly minimal. The act of finding a vantage point and trying not to offend anyone in the process, however, proved to be somewhat difficult. Of course, with Javier having a reasonable number of troops at his back, he didn't get far as he was interrupted at the city gates...

Edit: Javier was interrupted at the city gates. His actions resume in the next post. The story here is kept for archives purposes, but is not a part of official canon.

Failed Action:

Gilaver quietly sighed under his breath: there went the chances to negotiate peacefully. He took a more determined stance and began giving orders for the assembled Griffons and Clarion Calls, minus the one giving Natir his horse.

"Load your bows, previous orders still stand. If they start charging, fire. With the distance, we should be able get at least a couple of volleys in. Do not let them reach captain Natir!"

Klaus marched towards the line of horsemen, singing with as much gusto as he could conjure, and as they drew closer he turned and gestured towards one of the greatswords to accompany him. As the men behind continued singing, Klaus muttered some instructions under the cover of the lusty tune.

"Make tell all; keep march, look confident. Maybe we go right through. If my sword come off shoulder, it signal - we fight. If we make fight, you and greatswords run through middle and attack cavalry, city watch make two shieldwall, one either side of you. Protect stretcher and prisoner like they the king. Understand?"

Turning back to the rebels ahead, Klaus took a deep breath and joined in again.

"...for the King!
An army he would always..."

The nobles were chasing Natir mere seconds after he started sprinting. Spurring their horses on, they lowered the lances as they rushed onward. As one, the archers of the Griffons and the Clarion Call released their arrows into the rushing noble knights. The charge slowed slightly, one of the men thrown from his horse. However, Natir was still in danger and, before a second volley could be loosed, the outnumbered Griffon knights charged. Skillfully guiding their horses, the Griffon knight avoided serious injury as they clashed with the noble cavalry, bringing two more of the lesser-trained cavalry down.

Behind, Natir grabbed his borse mid-stride and swung up as his outriders followed up, ready to aid the knights.

At the bend, Klaus Witz advanced on the line of infantry that intended to cut him off from his line of retreat. His archers faced the opposite direction, loosing volleys into the rebels behind them. Though the rebel archers tried valiantly to break the Gryphon line, they were cut down instead, several men crumpling to the ground, nearly halving their strength. The rebels behind them, however, were undeterred and rushed forward. Shooting at will, the archers cut down several more and the pursuit slowed, at least for a moment.

On his front, Klaus' troops collided with the rebel line before him. The rebels, aggressive and over-eager, struck at his troops. The city guard, untested and nervous, buckled and several fell to the rebel troops. In the center of the formation, greatswords sang through the air, breaking the rebel momentum before it could overwhelm the group. Neither side had lost yet, but seconds counted.

______

To the west, among the rebel lines, a man of noble bearing approached Sir Lucius. "I am Lord Kilnam, and I control the rabble at the wharf. Someone has to keep them in line, untrained as they are. So, had the church finally seen the injustice in the city and finally come to help?"

Before Lucius could answer, the lord looked east. "Actually, before we answer each other's questions, I'm afraid we have trouble on High Street to deal with. They'll need reinforcements, if only to hold the line."

The sounds of battle were fiercer than ever and only grew louder and, in some ways, more familiar as the reinforcements approached.

Though it was simple for Javier alone to slip out of the city undetected, a group as large as his was spotted by the guards at the Salt Gate. Apparently returned from their peculiar absence earlier, the rebel troops had the gate closed long before, wary of the Eventide encampment just beyond their post.

"Halt!" called one. "State your business!" Though he didn't seem to have much authority or experience, he had enough presence of mind to at least sound the part.

The fact that he was standing above a pair of giant wooden doors didn't hurt, either.

From on top of his horse Natir could see the battle better. He saw three men on the ground, leaving 7 hostile Knights left, and with the initial charge of the knights over the threat of the lances had passed. So he ordered his men to engage the knights.

"Quick men to the help of Griffons. We must return peace to this city" With that he pulled out his shield and spear and charge into the fight.

"The Church has, my Lord," Sir Lucius replied to Lord Kilnam. "As have the Radiant Cross and Dragons."

"But indeed," said Lucius, looking to the east. "I'll head that way immediately! I suspect you have already done so, but if you can also spare any additional men for High Street, you should do so now." The Dawnite paused for a moment, considering something. "I don't know if anyone commands you, but it seems that battle has arrived in Windholm. This is an opportune time to press the attack on all fronts; the Duchess's forces would certainly not expect such a courageous move from those they consider to be cowardly rebels. You and your compatriots certainly have allies to work with now, so if you could pass the word quickly and without initiating an uncoordinated and ill-timed offensive, it would be greatly appreciated by Astraea."

Sir Lucius then turned to his men. "To High Street!" Immediately, the Dawn made for the conflict at a brisk pace, in a loose but aggressive formation, realizing that not even a second could be spared. With any luck, Sir Morek and his men would follow.

Upon charging at the enemies, Gilaver had drawn his one-handed sword and shield to be used. They were better than Mistral when fighting on horseback. Gilaver also noted that the charge had been a minor success for them. Soon the Clarion Call would strike too, further beating down the rebellious cavalry. He also saw the infantry line engaging someone else, but decided to focus on this engagement first.

Klaus, his blade already running red with the blood of the rebels took a step back from the carnage, the adrenaline thundering in his ears from the excitement of the melee. He took a moment to glance around, and noted with satisfaction how the greatswords were handling themselves. While they were no Mettenheimers, they had not brought dishonour on the culture they had come to represent.

His eyes then swept over the twin shieldwalls on the flank, noting their apparent weakness and the nervousness of the men. He then looked back and saw that the archers were doing well protecting his rear. The most pressing then were the flanks, so he took a moment longer to identify the weaker of the pair.

"These rebels, they make burn your city, they danger your wifes, you children, they cry in fear at night! Fight! This is your city! Fight! Fight for Windholm!" Abandoning his place at the centre, Klaus dropped back and joined the shieldwall, urging the men on with the cry.

"Press forward! Make them die! You are Fierdsvain, your ancestors great warriors! I am foreigner, I do not see this Fierdsvain blood in you now. Prove it to me! Prove it to Windholm!"

With that he leapt into the fray once more, his sword singing with each swing.

Morek had been unsubtly eavesdropping on the conversation between the lord and lucius if the fact his helmet had been staring at the two the entire time. Once he heard what was required, and the sounds of clashing metal amid the screams of dying men he turned towards. High street and began to march, barking out a curt order to fall in.

The radiants moved in a tighter formation than the dawn, but was spread wide as compared to long, with morek, flanked by his loyal conquistadors, leading a wedge of crossbow wielding plaguewardens who in turn were followed by a wedge of sword and shield drawn retainers. The radiant knights followed them in a wedge as well, ready to step forwards and take a cavalry charge should one appear or support behind the shield carrying plaguewardens in a melee after a volley of crossbow bolts had been fired.

Beneath his helmet morek was repeating a litany under his breath, his knights and men doing the same, someone close enough might have heard such snatches as "into the fire of battle", "under their watchful eyes" and "tested upon the anvil of war". It seemed that martial ability and religious doctrine had become blended together in the radiant knight, and that in turn had bled down through the ranks to his men. Dragged along behind the wedge was melka by a single plaguewarden, who appeared displeased at being denied a place in the battle line due to his job of shepharding her.

The radiants cross marched quickly, ready to shpre up the line, and confident their abilities, polehammers, blades and most importantly their leader would create an impact. Morek h8mself marched with his, morningstar in hand, the dark metal. Contrasting with the glinting silver spikes on the head, his shield strapped to his arm as he raied the weapon and called out.

"the gods watch us now, and what better way to see if they favor us than the fires of war?!"

As soon as Javier rounded up his men and prepared for the march to the Duke's Wharf, he was stopped by a strange barrier of wood that was not present there before. Looking up, Javier found some men peering down at him and his company, demanding business.

The knight looked around at his gathering when he noted that Robert, Nikolai, and Victor were absent. Apparently they went ahead to the Harbor, but will probably report Javier's position being at the Wharf...

Javier coughed to clear his throat, and replied at the guard stationed above him, "Hello, guardian of Windholm! My men were merely taking in the sights of the Duke's Wharf from our little vantage point when we received orders to move out. We are to leave by sea, there is a ship in the harbor awaiting our arrival. May we pass?"

Klaus Witz's words seemed to invigorate the shaken guard formation, who redoubled their efforts. Pushing back several rebels who had gotten too close with their shields, their spears met flesh and they tore through the rebel formation with vigor and a zeal bordering on bloodlust. The last few men on the flanks broke and scattered into the nearby alleys, before the Griffon greatswords in the center could mop them up. Their rear was likewise covered, the archers loosing two volleys in quick succession. The first tore through the rebel infantry, leaving a mass of them on the ground. They broke and ran, pushing past the archers, who caught the brunt of the second volley, adding to the pile of bleeding and dead on the ground.

Down the road, the knights continued their battle with sword and shield, lances either broken or otherwise discarded in the tight confines of the street. It was Sir John who brought the next horseman down, however, slicing a noble's leg clean off with his sword. John looked around and backed off, however, as the Larian Outriders thundered into the fight around him, spears and swords seeking targets. The charge turned the field to chaos for a moment, nobles and outriders alike thrown from their horses in a chaotic whirlwind of blood and death. Numbers won the day, though, as only three nobles tried to recollect themselves at the edge of the road from the original ten.
______

Lord Kilnam sent messengers up and down the line. "I hope the situation on High Street is good," he remarked after. "A large number of our troops moved that way and it could have a significant effect on our forces here if they were to be lost. Of course, with three of the strongest orders in Pendor on our side, the tables may turn back yet again!"

The march to the road was short, but the reinforcements were quickly greeted by a small handful of commoners, unarmed and panicked running into the safety of the siege works around the Duke's Wharf. Up the road, a small group could be see. Even at a distance, their colors marked them as Griffons. One ran around the bend they were positioned at, leaving the other seven to watch the growing force of knights to their fore.

"Grey or Gold, was it?" shouted Javier in response.

Not even pausing to think, Javier let forth his ramblings, "Well, the rebel leader is obviously refers to the Greybeards, or was it Goldtooth? No, no, the color Grey is a reference to the common struggle while Gold represents the rich oppressors... wait, or does Gold signify the merchants?"

Anton, an Eventide knight, briefly chimed in, "Greysword is the Duchess, sir."

"Of course! We support the color Grey!..." Javier paused for a moment before coming to the realization.

"Wait! We support Gold! Grey is the Duchess color while Gold signifies merchants! Gold is our final answer, guardian of Windholm!"

Sir Lucius saw the commoners retreating from the fighting that had already taken place on High Street and grimaced beneath his helmet. This is precisely what he didn't want to see so early on. Lucius gestured to his men and they drastically slowed their pace.

"Men on Windholm!" the Dawnite exclaimed at the commoners. "Do not flee from your oppressors! This is your chance to save your city from the clutches of injustice! Astraea will protect you and bring victory to us all! The Goddess will remember your valiant stand for the forces of justice!" Lucius hoped that his plea would convince the retreating forces to once again fight against Greysword's forces. Soon enough he'd have his answer.

[Lucius uses his Priest background and silver-tongued trait to try to convince the rebels.]

Sir Lucius refocused his attention at the Griffon colors in the distance and wondered what had become of Sir Aelos and the Dragons. But he couldn't worry about that right now. He readied his shield and weapon, waiting for Sir Morek's forces and the results of his rallying cry.

Morek's force finally caught up with the Dawnites as Lucius was entreating the fleeing commoners to rally. Morek stepped forth as well, letting his own steady voice ring out.

"The gods watch us now, men of WIndholm, do not be found wanting in courage under their all seeing gaze! Know you are not alone, the Radiant Cross and Dawn stand with you! Turn and show those dogs of the Duchess how the Fierdsvain Bear fights for its home!"

[Morek uses his priest background with Lucius in an attempt to stop the retreat and rally the rebels]

After saying his piece Morek turned to his men.

"Fall in with the Dawn, Plaguewaradens draw crossbows. All Plaguewardens." Morek took Melka from her minder and cut her bonds from her hands, taking the weapons she had carried before her detainment and returning them to her before stepping back and addressing her.

"You are free to do as you please, though keep this in mind, you owe me a debt for not turning you over to the tender mercies of the Eventide. I imagine your friend is dead by now and yet here you remain, whole in every way. Fight with us and your debt is paid, or flee and be damned by the divines for cowardice. I may end up owing you if you fight." With that he returned to his men, who had integrated themselves in the Dawn party, the plaguewardens each pairing off with a shield bearing Dawn Wyvern as the Knights kept their polehammers ready yet lowered so as not to reveal their presence to the enemy as a new battle line was formed. Morek turned to look at Lucius.

"Into the fires of battle we go Dawnite, have you commended your soul to Astrea? We may be meeting her soon."

Gilaver looked at Sir John and told him to go tell Klaus about the meeting, the results and the traitor orders that would oppose the Griffons. He then turned to the nearest Clarion Call commander.

"Don't attack yet, we can get information out of those nobles."

Gilaver shouted to his knights to follow and motioned for the Clarion Calls who weren't taking the wounded to get behind the Griffons. He looked at the nobles and bellowed to them:

"You have fought well sir-knights, but you have lost. Drop your weapons and surrender, and no harm shall be done to you. Should you choose to fight, we have no choice but to strike you down. I advice you to make the decision quickly, and avoid foolish moves."

Gilaver motioned his arm along the Clarion Calls behind the action-ready Knights and the Gryphons with partially-drawn bows that were creeping to get behind Gilaver's troops to avoid a possible charge.

OOC: Sir John uses his super-sprinting skills to go to Klaus to inform him about stuff and is removed from Gilaver's roster in order to rejoin Klaus.

PostSubject: Re: IC Scene - The Duke's Wharf   IC Scene - The Duke's Wharf - Page 2 Empty06.06.13 12:03

Breathing heavily Klaus flipped his helm visor open as the last of the rebels broke and ran, accompanied by the jeering from the city watch. The Griffons, more professional did not join in, but they like him flipped their helms open and to a man were smiling.

The battle over, Klaus finally had time to check on the wounded Arrin, so he began scanning his own lines for the stretcher bearers. Before he could make his way over to them however, Sir John joined him, breathless from his run.

"Sir Klaus, Sir Gilaver sends his compliments, and asked that I relay news of the meet..."

"Sir!" one of the archers interrupted, having sprinted from their rear guard position "More knights moving towards us. Radiants, Dawn and Dragons by the look of them!"

"Super!" Klaus exclaimed happily, but before he could continue Sir John cut him off.

"Not super sir, at the meeting those orders declared for the rebellion" Klaus stared at the greatswordsman, his mind working slowly, his mind translating the revelation slowly. He hoped it was good news, but the frown on John's face decided otherwise.

Lost for a moment, Klaus looked around the somewhat depleted ranks of the city guard, and at the greatswords now talking animatedly with one another, he then glanced at his surroundings, apparently unseeing as his mind now kicked into gear and worked furiously. Buildings lined the street, many abandoned thanks to the heavy fighting in the area, windows and doors smashed in.

"Sir John, make go to Gilaver. Tell him and the Clarion commander to meet me in that building. I must make talk, very important. Ask the rest of their forces to pull back, we need to talk to the rebel orders, and I do not want them scared." Klaus commanded, gesturing to the large house with three stories on the corner. Turning then to the archer he continued "make your companions back here. I want archers in at the windows, city watch and greatswords on the ground floor. Bring Arrin inside, make sure he is well. Make send prisoner to Jorm's camp."

Sir John looked about to argue at the order for another run, but seeing the thunderous look on Klaus's face he turned and moved away without a word, snapping at the prisoner guard to follow him before speeding off ahead of them. The archer also ran back to his companions, and Klaus walked along behind him more slowly his mind still running through different scenarios. Unfortunately he knew precisely what had to be done, he only hoped that they wouldn't ride him down before he could.

The group of archers passed him as he rounded the bend, leaving him alone on the street. Klaus walked slowly down the center of it, sheathing his blade as he did. As he neared the advancing knightly lines, he held his arms to his sides to show he was unarmed, and bellowed in his best command voice hoping that they could hear him.

"I must make talk!"

Sir Lucius looked to Morek when he spoke, nodding slowly. "I have, but fear not Knight of the Radiant Cross. Astraea will not lead me astray," he said with great conviction. "We are instruments of Her will."

Quickly, Lucius surveyed his surroundings again, giving the Rebels time to recover, hoping their words succeeded. The voice of a Griffon interrupted him though and he turned his attention to the middle of the street, many meters ahead.

"Sir Morek..." he began, quiet enough that the opposing knight would be unable to hear, "If you have no objection to delaying battle, I believe this could buy the Rebels needed time..."

Morek gave Lucius a nod, responding in the same low voice.

"Battle may be where we show who is favored by the gods, but they frown upon needless or foolish bloodshed. Let him talk, should something happen, my Plaguewardens will ensure he does not reach their lines again. Drag it out as long as you can."

Morek made a few gestures to his men, the Knights nodded and made a few quiet whispered orders of their own, the retainers of the Radiant Cross ensured that they each had an armor piercing bolt slotted home into their crossbows, striving to stay hidden, out of sight behind the Dawn Wyverns and their shields.

Morek was staring at the approaching Klaus,

"He looks like he wears Mettenheim Plate, and sounds like a Mettenheimer."

One of Moreks knights chimed in.

"He is sir. If I'm right, that's the same Griffon who approached our camp outside the walls for medical aid for one of his men. The mans feet were blistered, said something about running. I'd guess he might have trained his men in the ways of the Greatswords from his Homeland."

Morek grumbled to himself under his breath, if his knight was correct then the enemy battle line was a fierce force indeed.

Lucius nodded at Sir Morek. "Be ready." The Dawn reacted to this, the Knights and Wyverns readying their shields and weapons again, but visibly more relaxed than before.

After a moment, the Dawnite focused on the Griffon and took several steps forward. "Hold your ground!" he bellowed at the man, sheathing his own sword. "I'm going to approach you, but make no sudden moves. We will meet halfway. Understand?" Slowly, and with his shield still ready, Knight-Brother Lucius approached the Mettenheimer.
