PostSubject: IC Scene - The Duke's Wharf   IC Scene - The Duke's Wharf Empty25.05.13 19:30

The Duke's Wharf: Merely the personal dock of the rulers of Windholm, it became a flashpoint when the rebellion began. Used by Greysword's forces as a staging point in the south of the city, it quickly became a hotbed of the fiercest skirmishes of the rebellion. The most isolated of the Greysword positions, it was surrounded by rebels after the Duchess, in a fit of paranoia, withdrew most of her men to the castle. The Wharf has since held out, but has been cut off from supply and the defenders are weary. Some in both camps feel that, mundane though it is, it could become a flashpoint for the decisive battle of the rebellion.

For those on the side of the Duchess, they were directed to it by way of High Street. It was the only semi-secure road to the wharf, even if actual access was cutoff. Sirs Gilaver and Natir matched swiftly, the road clear. Occasionally, the sound of clashing steel echoed off the buildings, ostensibly from a crowd of people ahead. As they drew closer, they could see a group of horsemen lined up across the road, a line of infantry guarding their backs against the new arrivals. On the far side of the line, Greysword banners were visible.

For those among the rebel's supporters, they were guided along Palatial Avenue as a secure route to the rebel line. The commoners, nobles and mercenaries were tense, aware of the activity down the line, but unsure of how to act, knowing that leaving their posts could give the besieged a much need opportunity.

Gilaver looked at the horsemen then at Natir.

"I suggest we circle around these rebels and reach the lines of Greysword over there. They might have the information we need. We are all on horses and can reach them fast."

The Griffon Archers had been put on the Knights' horses for the speed needed.

Sir Natir nodded in agreement, he wanted to avoid combat if possible, and made a hand signal to his men to follow the Griffons down a side road and to attempt to find another way to the wharf

Slipping down the streets quietly Alexis picked a building with a good line of sight over the entire wharf then motioned for 2 of her companions to guard the entrance while she went to an upper window and looked out from the shadows while her third companion checked the roof.

(( Meaning use the back door to go in and don't go out of the street onto the wharf to use the front. ))

Knight-Brother Lucius, his men, and the Radiant Cross troops traveling alongside them, continued their brisk pace down the Palatial Avenue towards the Duke's Wharf. He surveyed the various Rebels as they passed them, noting the tenseness among them. "Hold the line! Astraea shall protect you!" he exclaimed, hoping to boost morale. Lucius considered telling them to attack but knew that would've have instilled confusion considering they were not actually under his command. Hopefully that would change soon.

As the Radiant-Dawn party marched Morek was struck by an odd sensation, the pair of orders colors were opposite each other, the Radiants a white cross upon a field of black compared to the Dawns black cross set on a background of purest white. The sound of Lucius addressing the Windholmian troops shook him out of his reverie and he made the sign of Aatrea on his breast with one hand as the goddesses name was invoked, murmuring a quiet prayer to the deity, asking for a swift end to the hostilities and the safety of his men.

The Radiant troops were a sight to behold, marching in unison with their fellows, they had obviously been trained well by the their commander.

Upon arriving at the rebel lines William began to bark orders to his men.

"Form ranks! Look presentable! Attention! Aelos, thoughts on our current situation?"

The Thane had fire in his eyes as he paced up and down his men's lines.

"None, William. Just hold the line, I suppose."

Aelos' white courser was restless and her hooves stamped loudly on the road below. A line of commoners, mercenaries and nobles. Or more likely, smallfolk to stop the charge, mercenaries to run when the battle moves in the Duchess' favour and nobles that didn't have the skill or ambition to join a knightly Order. If his words wouldn't be overheard that's what he would have said, but now it would just lower morale.

Aelos looked around at the banners standing proudly above the rebel forces, sure enough he recognized two Orders already.

"The Order of the Dawn, under Sir Lucius of Amala. And they seem to be accompanied by the Order of the Radiant Cross, under the Priest Morek. The Dawn's charge and the Radiant Cross' support should even the odds quite nicely."

The Dragon forces had arrived last and there was some distance between the factions, but the presence of these two Orders made Aelos calm enough to finally get his courser under control.

"Thane Alatin, I will discuss tactics with them at once. Sir Karstan with me!"

Aelos gave his courser the spurs as he left formation and rode towards the Dawn troops, with Karstan at his six. Slowing down considerately while passing the Radiant and Dawn knights, he came to an halt next to Sir Lucius.

"Sir Lucius, If I may have a word in private?"

The Dawnites quickly made their way to the Rebel lines at the Duke's Wharf, but they didn't recklessly charge into the fighting. Sir Lucius took the time to survey the area, hoping Sir Morek would do so as well. It was then that he saw the Dragons and Aelos approaching on horseback.

"As you wish, Sir Aelos," Lucius replied. "Sir Jofrid! You are in command for the moment." He then motioned for the Dragon to follow as he removed himself from his men.

Morek was not one to charge recklessly into combat, he would commit to a fight if he believed he had a chance of winning, as all commanders should. He turned his head to survey the men he lead. The Plaguewardens would acquit themselves well, they always did with their heavy crossbows and stout shields paired with a fine blade. His Radiant Knights stood proudly, carrying themselves like the veterans they were, each with their polehammer in their grip. Morek knew from first hand experience how effective that they were against charging cavalry. It would be interesting to see if they acquitted themselves as well against Lion and Call Knights as they did against the Cobra Warriors and Anaconda Knights of the Snake Cult.

In the end Morek did what Lucius had hoped he would do, take his time and get his bearings. His Conquistadors did what they did best, walk around and look tough, though Morek knew they had the gear and skill to back it up. Morek took the time to talk to some of the rebels were at hand, to see what their take of it was and to subtly examine them and their gear while they talked, his eyes and face still hidden behind his helmet. Morek didn't remember if he had ever taken it off in the city but he had a feeling he had not.

Aelos followed Sir Lucius, and both men exchanged words for a few minutes. Sir Karstan remained with the Dawnites during the conversation between the two knight-captians, but when Aelos' white courser galloped back towards Thane Alatin, he too gave his heavy destrier the spurs and again took position in the Dragons formation.

"They didn't know who was in charge of the rebels, William. But I have a feeling we'll know soon enough."

"Good the sooner we have a chain of command the better. Alright I want you lads in the front shields out look out for pesky archers and attempt to defend the... lesser equipped rebels whenever possible, you in the back, protect the shield bearers and the rest of you will await orders upon speaking with Rebel leader. Get crakin'! "

William was ready. He paced excitedly around barking orders every which way, he had always heard that a lion hunt was quite exciting, and afterwards you can make a nice rug out of the skin... well he would soon find out.

The rebel line where the Dawn and others had emerged was relatively peaceful. Indeed, up and down the Bay Road, there was no fighting to be seen. It seemed that no one had pushed out from the wharf and, at least to the orders' eyes, no one had attacked the line from without. To the east, however, there was a noticeable gap in the line, with only a handful of men guarding one of the roads leading to the wharf. No active fighting was present, but the line was possibly compromised.

Gilaver and Natir circumvented the southward bend in High Street and whatever disturbance had cut off the most direct path. The rebel footmen, protecting the backs of the cavalry behind them, however, felt the the group had gotten too close and called to their mounted allies. The horsemen turned their mounts as the footmen filtered back behind them, reversing their formation. They seemed to be preparing for a charge.

Alexis managed to find an abandoned building along Bay Road, between its junctions with Palatial Avenue and High Street. It was closer to the latter, but lacked a view of it. The post did offer an effective view of the Wharf, however, and could easily cover the two nearest roads leading out to the waterfront and what were, hopefully, the most likely battle locations. To the left, the rebel troops were sparse, mostly guarding the road, interested in something along High Street, but casting glances back at the besieged wharf as well. To the right, rebels guarded the other road in slightly greater numbers, but for some reason, a large number seemed to be...missing.

Smiling at the view Alexis stayed to the side of the window on the upper floor out of sight and sent her 3 companions to cover the downstairs entrances.

" Make sure nothing gets in and stay out of sight you got it? We might have work to do here and I'd rather they not know exactly where we're at. "

That done she counted up the number of rebels on each of the 2 positions carefully and took note of the equipment they had then looked towards the warf to judge how many men had gone to it.

Sir Lucius returned from his conversation with the Dragon and quickly conversed with his second-in-command, Sir Jofrid of Valonbray. He then surveyed the rebel lines once more before giving orders to the Dawn Knights. "We must reinforce the Western lines! Let's move!" he barked. His men responded immediately.

"Sir Morek?" Lucius asked as he approached the other Knight. "Your men may continue accompanying the Dawn, if you so wish it. But might I have a private word if so?"

Aelos spotted the Dawn moving to protect the western line and quickly raised himself up in his courser to have a better view over the rest of the infantry lines. There were footmen looking in the wrong direction, but with such an obvious mass gathered..there had to be something happening on High street.

He had to think of something, but be careful not to overthink like he normally did.

"Thane Alatin, I place Sir Klovis and Sir Hodor under your command. There's something happening to the left of our position. If all goes well, I'll meet you on the battlefield."

Aelos kicked his courser as he sat down and motioned Sirs Karstan, Wulven and Alm to follow him.

Morek turned to face the Dawnite, his conversation with a pair of nervous looking rebels that were fingering holy charms around their necks paused for a moment.

"Of course Sir Lucius, I ask that it be kept brief unless it is important, some of these men have spiritual needs that must be met before the forces meet in battle." Apparently, his own troops seen to, Morek was reassuring the common troops and any mercenaries that would listen, bolstering their morale by assuring them that the gods would protect them in the battle to come, or if they should fall safeguard their souls against the darker powers across the veil.

Sir Lucius returned from his conversation with Morek and quickly made his way to the front of his men. As they closed in on the Eastern lines, he again surveyed what he could of the rebel lines while also removing his shield from his back. This would've been far easier on horseback, but he didn't have that luxury so he cast the thought aside. Oddly, however, it didn't seem immediately apparent that any major conflict occurred; certainly this was incorrect, so he looked harder.

As they passed more rebels, he asked all of them. "Good men of Windholm, Astraea stands with you on this day!" Lucius shouted passionately. "Who is commanding you?"

Gilaver looked over their situation in a very calm manner. 10-strong force of cavalry could be a bad opponent for a group like them, but they couldn't just go and attack the rebels yet. Gilaver gave the orders for the archers and Sir John to dismount. It would be a start.

"Griffons, form a line in between the rebel cavalry and Gryphons. Do not charge in, Gryphons have an arrow ready."

Gilaver looked at Natir.

"Take positions in between these two units and keep bows ready. Try not to block our archers' line of sight. We will continue moving toward the possible Duchess' forces in full alert. Should that cavalry charge, everyone will fire their bows at the enemy in rapid succession. The Griffon Knights will charge when they reach the halfway between our troops and their starting position. If possible, sir Natir, could your outriders join that charge in the flanks: any extra lance is appreciated."

Sir Natir nodded recognizing Gilavers suggestions, he motioned for his captains Vanha, and Petro to move their squads into position. The seasoned veteran Captain Vanha nodded in a similar fashion, and immediately moved his men. The young Captain Petro was more reluctant. Petro emphasived more with the rebels and he rode up along side Sir Natir, but before he could speak Sir Natir cut him off. "Get in position." With one stern look Petro understood that Natir was not in the mood to entertain his thoughts so he fell back into line.

Sir Natir spoke to Gilaver
"Perhaps approaching these rebels and asking them what happened may be useful, they seem to be from the nobles so they should grant an audience if either of us or both go alone."

"Indeed, nobles with proper etiquette woud allow us to talk. However, these have openly acted against their lawful lord and thus broken their vows. I wouldn't put it past them to ignore our sign of wanting to talk."

Gilaver took a slight breath before continuing.

"Still, there is a possibility of them listening to us, if you are willing to take the risk."

Natir contemplated the possibilities for a moment. "I think I'll risk it, but you should stay no point risking both of our necks. Captain Vanha! Your in charge while I'm gone." Natir set off towards the rebels before Petro could complain about not being put in charge.

Sir Natir rode forward with his bow and light lance sheathed. Rode up till he was in earshot of the rebel cavalry.
"You there! I'm Outrider-Captain Natir of the Clarion Call. I come here with nothign bu good will. We are not here to fight you. Sir Gilaver and I are merely here to instigate the claim that members of our orders attack your outposts under the direction of the Duchess. Neither Sir Gilaver nor I were aware of any behavior being made by our members and are here for information. To prove my goodwill. " Sir Natir got off of his horse, keeping his weapons on the horse and then sending it back to his troops. Turning back to the rebels he spoke. "So who is in charge here."
